Members may be aware that the Urban Renewal Authority has planned to demolish the existing Wanchai Market at Queen's Road East in order to make way for a joint venture project dated back to LDC's period for residential redevelopment. The relevant amendment planning proposal was approved by the Town Planning Board recently. Built in 1937, the current Wanchai Market has been most appealing for its design of the then contemporary style, i.e. Bauhaus or Streamline Moderne so claimed by most architects, a historical development of the indoor market in the local context which calls for briliant merging of its function with the modern architecture. Besides, the historical significance of Wanchai Market can even be traced back to 1858 (146 years from now !) when the former Wanchai Market as its predecessor was built just at the opposite site accross Wanchai Road.
